NBC pays ‘SNL’ audience to comply with COVID-19 restrictions

Oct. 6 (UPI) — Each audience member for Saturday Night Live‘s season premiere walked out with a surprise $150 check.

A live audience of about 100 people attended the NBC sketch comedy show’s debut of its 46th season on Saturday live from Studio 8H in New York City’s Rockefeller Center.

New York’s COVID-19 guidelines prohibit live audiences at “media production activities,” including shows like SNL unless the audience is made up of paid cast, crew or employees.

Audience members requested free tickets through a third-party website earlier in the week.

Sean Ludwig, a freelance writer from Brooklyn, who attended Saturday’s live show said he and his fellow audience members were surprised by the $150 checks being handed out as they walked out the door.

SNL distributed the free tickets through the casting agency 1iota, but 1iota’s website did not mention compensation for audience members, prompting the state to issue a public warning Thursday, but NBC maintained that it had followed all the state guidelines and protocols.

Some of the free tickets were reserved for healthcare workers, who received a shout-out at the start of the show.

NBC was able to count the audience members as employees by paying them, which put the show in compliance with the state’s COVID-19 restrictions, according to the state Department of Health.

SNL has confirmed that they followed the reopening guidance, including selecting audience members through a third-party screening and casting process and compensating them for their time as paid audience members,” Health Department spokesman Jonah Bruno said in a statement.

Among the strict protocols, they each received a rapid COVID-19 test as they entered Rockefeller Center and had to test negative before they could enter the studio. Audience members were also required to wear masks for the entire show and were seated in “pods” of seven, eight or nine people who requested tickets together.

The New York guidelines allow a paid live audience of up to 100 people or 25% of the audience capacity, whichever is lower.

Watch: Justin Bieber wants ‘tribe’ of kids with Hailey Baldwin

Dec. 1 (UPI) — Justin Bieber hopes to have “a little tribe” of kids with his wife, Hailey Baldwin.

The 26-year-old singer discussed his plans to have children with Baldwin, 24, during Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

Bieber said he wants to have as many kids as possible with Baldwin, a model.

“I’m going to have as many as Hailey is wishing to push out,” the star said. “I’d love to have myself a little tribe, but yeah, it’s her body and whatever she wants to do.”

“I think she wants to have a few, at least two or three,” he added.

Bieber said he and Baldwin are waiting to have children until Baldwin accomplishes more of her goals.

“There’s not really an issue, but I think Hailey still has some things she wants to accomplish as a woman,” he said. “I think she’s just not ready yet, and I think that’s okay.”

Bieber also discussed the road trip he and Baldwin took during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We definitely enjoyed ourselves. Got to travel across North America. We went all the way home to Canada on the bus,” he said. “It was a good time.”

During the trip, Bieber had a scary experience where his jet ski broke and the boat sent to retrieve him also broke down. Bieber had to swim to safety in freezing cold water.

“It was dangerous,” he said.

Bieber and Baldwin married in September 2018 and had a second wedding with family and friends in October 2019. The couple danced together in Baldwin’s first TikTok video in March.

Bieber released the song “Monster” with Shawn Mendes in November.

The 25-year-old model posted unseen pictures from her pregnancy Monday on Instagram.

The photos show a pregnant Hadid posing outside in a formfitting dress. One of the pictures shows Malik, 27, resting his head on Hadid’s baby bump.

Hadid and Malik welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in September.

“Our girl joined us earth-side this weekend and she’s already changed our world. So in love,” Hadid said on Instagram at the time.

“To try to put into words how i am feeling right now would be an impossible task,” Malik added on Twitter. “The love i feel for this tiny human is beyond my understanding. Grateful to know her, proud to call her mine, & thankful for the life we will have together.”

Hadid called her daughter her “bestie” in an Instagram post last week. She later gave a glimpse of her baby girl’s head in a new photo. Hadid and Malik’s daughter has blonde hair.

Hadid and Malik have had an on-again, off-again relationship since 2015. Hadid is known for her modeling work with Guess and Victoria’s Secret, while Malik is a singer and a former member of One Direction.
