Guitarist Eddie Van Halen dies at 65, following bout with cancer

Published

Oct. 6 (UPI) — Guitarist Eddie Van Halen died Tuesday following a battle with cancer, his son said. He was 65.

Wolf Van Halen announced the death of his father, also the namesake of the band Van Halen, in a post on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

“I can’t believe I’m having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning. He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.”

Eddie Van Halen was born in Nijmegen, Netherlands, on Jan. 26, 1955, and his family emigrated to Pasadena, Calif., eight years later.

He and his brother, drummer Alex, founded the band that would go on to become Van Halen in 1972, cementing a line-up with bassist Michael Anthony and singer David Lee Roth in 1974.

The band found success with 1979’s “Dance the Night Away” and their sixth album 1984 peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard albums chart behind the strength of hits such as “Jump,” “Panama” and “Hot for Teacher.”

Eddie Van Halen also contributed a guitar solo to “Beat It” on Michael Jackon’s Thriller the only album to top 1984 on the charts.

Roth eventually left Van Halen in 1985 to launch a solo career and was replaced by Sammy Hagar, but returned to the band briefly after Hagar departed in 1996, citing creative differences.

Hager wrote on Twitter Tuesday that he was “heartbroken and speechless,” hearing the news.

“My love to the family,” he wrote.

Gary Cherone eventually took over as the band’s frontman for their 1998 album Van Halen III but Roth and Hagar would both return at later points.

Wolf Van Halen also joined the band as a bassist in 2006.

The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007.

Watch: Julia Louis-Dreyfus says ‘Seinfeld’ fundraiser was formed ‘last minute’ on ‘Tonight Show’

Published

on

Oct. 23 (UPI) — Julia Louis-Dreyfus appeared on The Tonight Show to discuss her Seinfeld fundraiser for the Texas Democratic Party that will also include Jason Alexander and Larry David.

The fundraiser event titled A Fundraiser About Something, can be viewed Friday at 8 p.m. EDT by donating any amount.

“I’m just constantly racking my brain about getting the message out about voting and raising funds for the Democrats and what’s an effective way to doing that. I thought, ‘Oh, well let’s get the Seinfeld group together, if I can.’ It was very last minute. I mean like hyper last minute,” Louis-Dreyfus told host Jimmy Fallon on Thursday.

Louis-Dreyfus, Alexander and David will provide discussion and behind-the-scenes commentary on their favorite episodes.

Seth Meyers, of Late Night, will serve as the host.

“I picked ‘The Soup Nazi,’ Jason Alexander picked ‘The Marine Biologist’ and Larry David picked ‘The Contest.’ So, anyway, that’ll be super fun and we’re going to have sort of Seinfeld memorabilia stuff that we’re gonna raffle away to people who sign up for this,” Louis-Dreyfus continued.

The actress also discussed the importance of encouraging others to vote and having a voting plan for the presidential election.

“Getting people to vote sometimes can be a heavy lift. I think sometimes because the voter-suppression effort is such a strong one that people feel disenfranchised and feel as if their vote doesn’t matter. But, of course, you and I both know that’s not the case. The more people vote, the better it is for our democracy,” she said.

Louis-Dreyfus said that asking people about their voting plan can help talk them into casting a ballot.

“You have a very good shot at getting them to vote. So, in addition to making your own plan, asking people in your life what their plan is, is very effective,” she continued.

Oct. 23 (UPI) — British singer Adele gets playful in a promo for her episode of Saturday Night Live.

The NBC sketch comedy series shared a teaser Thursday featuring Adele, musical guest H.E.R. and SNL star Kate McKinnon. Adele will host the show for the first time Saturday.

In the video, Adele introduces herself, saying, “Hi, I’m Adele and I’m hosting Saturday Night Live this week with musical guest H.E.R.” McKinnon then asks which “her” Adele is referring to.

“Yes, me. It is I who will be musical guest this week,” McKinnon jokes before the three start dancing toward the camera.

In another take, McKinnon uses a British accent to tell viewers to “tune in,” prompting Adele to use an American accent.

“Oh my god! No worries, girlfriend,” Adele says.

NBC released a photo Wednesday of Adele rehearsing ahead of Saturday’s episode.

News broke Sunday that Adele will host the episode.

“Bloooooody hellllll I’m so excited about this!! And absolutely terrified! my first ever hosting gig and for SNL of all things!!!!” Adele said on Instagram.

“I’ve always wanted to do it as a stand alone moment, so that I could roll up my sleeves and fully throw myself into it, but the time has never been right,” she added. “But if there was ever a time for any of us to jump head first into the deep end with our eyes closed and hope for the best it’s 2020 right?”

Adele released her third studio album, 25, in 2015. She is known for the singles “Rolling in the Deep,” “Someone Like You” and “Hello.”

Miley Cyrus to release ‘Plastic Hearts’ album in November

Published

on

Oct. 23 (UPI) — Miley Cyrus will release her seventh studio album in November.

The 27-year-old singer shared cover art and a release date, Nov. 27, for the album, titled Plastic Hearts, Thursday on Instagram.

In the caption, Cyrus recalled her journey to releasing the album. She said she was nearly finished with the album when her house was destroyed in California’s Woolsley Fire in November 2018.

“If you’re reading this… know that I [expletive] love and appreciate you on the deepest level,” Cyrus wrote. “I began this album over 2 years ago. Thought I had it all figured out. Not just the record with its songs and sounds but my whole [expletive] life. But no one checks an ego like life itself.”

“Just when I thought the body of work was finished… it was ALL erased. Including most of the musics relevance. Because EVERYTHING had changed,” she said.

Cyrus said she’s come to see the loss as “a favor” from nature that allowed her to find herself.

“Luckily my collaborators still had most of the music that was burned up in journals and computers filled with songs for the EP series I was working on at the time. But it never felt right to release my ‘story’ (each record being a continual autobiography) with a huge chapter missing,” the singer said.

“If it were a chapter in my book I guess I would call it ‘The Beginning’ which usually when something is over we call it ‘The End.’ But it was far from that,” she added. “In triumph and gratitude I present to you my 7th studio record, Plastic Hearts.”

Plastic Hearts features the single “Midnight Sky,” which Cyrus released in August. The album also includes Cyrus’ live covers of Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and the Cranberries’ “Zombie.”

Plastic Hearts will mark Cyrus’ first new album since Younger Now, released in September 2017. Since Younger Now, Cyrus has married and divorced actor Liam Hemsworth.

Cyrus will take part in the 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame virtual induction ceremony, which airs Nov. 7 on HBO. She is also nominated at the MTV Europe Music Awards, which air Nov. 8.
